I want to get a couple plants to make my tank more natural. I would like to get some java moss, java fern and/or a floating plant. Is it really a must to have a CO2 diffuser. would a floating plant need one since its not really in the water.

  1. For hardy plants like that you dont need a CO2 system. Give them water and basic lights and they will grow.

Other more exotic plants need better lights, extra CO2 and nutrients, but java moss will grow in practically any tank.

  2. That's fine. If you're only going to have a few plants in there, a CO2 diffuser isn't essential.

If you are going to have around 20+ plants, a CO2 diffuser is needed.

  3. Well we have had a freshwater 55 gal. tank for years with only natural plants, and we have never had a co2 diffuser.  We do make sure the plants we choose are from the right climate so that water temp. doesn't become an issue.

  4. If your going to only be housing the few plants you mention then no. If your going to employ MH and have an Amano tank, then yes.
