Do i really need a primer ?

problem i have is i bought too much sears weatherbeater latex exterior paint , on sale , 1 side of house , a cape cod, made 1950, with badly worn flaking cedar shakes type with vertical line grooves, i scrapped like h**l,primed with a latex primer then 2 coats of blue color wearterbeater latex ext. looks great. out of money can i scrape like h**l rest of house use no primer but 2-3 coats weatherbeater latex, need to have it hold up 2-3 years only ? original paint on house was a oil base paint ,painted 10 years ago

  1. Not only do you have to use primer on the rest but i'm afraid the painting you have already don't won't last a year....

    you cannot use an average latex primer over an oil base paint.

    Although you may be out of money I would suggest waiting until you have funds. I would suggest primering with a product called bullseye... zinzer (sp?) it is a very tough primer (you can darn near use it on your bath tub) and is one of very few products that will allow you to use a latex paint over an oil base.you can purchase this product as most paint stores or home centers such as Home Depot(around 20$ a gal.)   Before you go any further I would attempt to scrape off the paint you have already completed with a fingernail, if it peals, I am sorry to say it won't last the year out.

  2. Weather beater paint is good paint.  I've used it without a primer before without any problems.

    That paint should look good after one or two coats at the most.  Three coats would be an overkill.

  3. dont use the primer just repaint
