Do i seperate my lovebirds?

iv had my lovebirds for over a year and the female has come very abusive and I'm thinking about giving her away..i heard the male will die but i also heard he wont so..what really happens ..i need a pro

  1. He won't die... the thought that a lovebird *needs* a companion to survive is just an old wives' tale, as Christie said. He may be happier with a companion, but it isn't necessary for his survival, and as long as he gets some attention, whether it be from another bird or from you, he'll be okay.


  2. You can separate them into two different cages, right next to each other.  This way they can still interact, but your hen cannot abuse the male.  

    If they have always been together, they may desire the company of the other bird, but will not die without them, that is a common myth that is still being spread.  Iif you take one away, you will have to make sure to give lots of attention to the bird left behind.  Birds do go through a depression stage after their mate is gone and if they are fighting off an illness, the stress of the loss of this mate can make them ill.

    It may be that she has gotten hormonal and desires to mate and he does not.  If you are not prepared or desire to let them mate, it is best to separate them, especially as she seems to be abusive.  Lovie hens are known for killing their mates and offspring.
