  1. International students with an F-1 visa only need to get their visa renewed if it expires *and* they depart the United States. This is because any person who requests entry into the United States with a expired visa will be denied admission.

    If your F-1 visa expires, you will still be in status providing that your I-20 is current and valid. Although as I said previously, if you depart the U.S. with an expired visa, you must get it renewed before re-entering.

    All renewal of F1 visas are done at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. This requires going through the entire interview process again, including the visa application forms, submitting eviedence of funds etc and waiting for your passport/(new) visa to be returned to you.
