  1. Depends on how much you eat and what's in the bento, deep fried tempura would be fattening compare to something that has little oil in it.

  2. Eat too much of anything and it will make you fat, even carrots (though it would take a heck of a lot of them!). Either way, just look up how many portions of each food group you need and plan accordingly. I would reduce the carbs to a minimum so don't have both rice and noodles (rice usually overpowers a Japanese meal so I would reduce the portion to half since carbs are what feed those nasty little cancer cells hiding in our bodies). Protein and vegetables should be the main features of the bento lunch as long as they aren't fried. Instead of tempura you can use steamed vegetables or veggies stir fried (ideally in olive oil, oh yes, I did!) and seasoned (cut back on the salt!). Fish would be a better choice than meat, as long as it is tuna or salmon, otherwise beef is a good source of protein as long as it is lean. I'm not sure how much nutritional value the pickles have though. So either way, it isn't a matter of it being a bento lunch. Bento lunch is just a Japanese boxed lunch so it is all about what you plan on putting in it. There are several calorie calculators online such as this one http://hp2010.nhlbihin.net/menuplanner/m... so you can figure it out yourself. Hope that helps!

  3. Rule of thumb in Japan is that when you pack a bento box normally (A: 3 parts grain dishes, 1 part protein dishes, 2 parts vegetable dishes; B: without candy, junk food or fatty food; and C: without empty space), calories correspond directly to capacity. So a 600ml box should hold a 600-calorie meal.

  4. No, it wouldn't make you fat - provided that you don't eat too much rice or sushi. The veggies are usually very healthy, and so are the fish - just stay away, again, from bringing too much rice. Bring lots of seaweed instead. ;)

  5. Honestly?  Is your question serious?  If you put lots of high fat foods and high carbohydrate foods and high cholesterol foods into a bento box and then later into your mouth then yes, you will gain weight.  The fact that it is in a bento box doesn't change its nutritional value.

ETA WHOA!  What the h**l is that woman at the bottom on?!  Carbohydrates do not give you cancer!  Seriously, you Americans come up with some c**p sometimes.

  6. idts. i've never tried any but it looks healthy.

  7. They're perfectly healthy, there are two types of fat people in this world, the healthy kind, and the unhealthy kind. The healthy kind has this natural glow and aren't really that fat. The unhealthy kind is morbidly obese due to eating unhealthy processed junk and they don't have any nice glow. There is nothing wrong with eating bentos everyday as long as you carefully decide what you will put in them (keep it variety too!) and it seems to me that you have almost ALL the food groups. The amount of calories does not matter as long as what you're eating is good for you. And if you really don't want to gain a lot of weight just put smaller portions, 'cause after all, people can become fat eating (almost) anything, oranges, juices, etc.

  8. They're pretty healthy. However, if the person preparing the box chooses to put in much fried meat or fish, obviously that will add calories, and the white rice--with all the vitamins and fiber polished out of it--doesn't have much food value apart from the calories it gives you because of its carbohydrates. I admit it tastes good with the other food in the bento, though. Grilled fish or--yum--salmon would add fewer calories and less cholesterol than anything fried. If you fry something, make it a very small piece.
