On the grand cherokee you have a choice of a V6 or V8 if you get the V8 its obviously going to be alot of gas. The V6 gets a decent MPG for being an SUV.

Most of the engines installed in both models were the 6 cyl 4.0.

The Cherokee (most of them were the part time 4WD) will get around 18-21 mpg. The heavier Grand Cherokee, with full-time 4WD gets less. About 16-18.

My 93 Cherokee gets 19-20mpg.. Not bad not great... as far as weight is concerned the Cherokee doesnt weight as much as you might think.

Yes! its considered as SUV, and they burn alot of gas, they have big engines, and it takes a lot to run them :)

If you're looking for a truck that doesnt burn alot of gas, you'll have to chose a Hybrid...

While some of the answers without  poor ratings are pretty on  spot true,  also watch out for rear axle ratios. A 3;73 will burn EXACTLY 1.75 less MPG than the  3:55
