Do kolkata people feel shame to speak bengali openly infront of other people/?

because i have heard that kolkata people comminicate with other bengali by speaking english or hindi. i heard they think speaking bengali instead of english or hindi make them look foolish. i just curious. how can people leave their own mother tongue just to be smart.
