Do labs tend to lose weight during the summer time when they are active?

My dog weight was 86 through winter and now is 80 pounds. He looks very lean and muscular more than bony. I have looked at pictures of the labs on the internet. They all seem to have a skinny mid section and a bony rear end and a muscular upper body build. Right?

  1. Elizabeth, you're right. Labs do indeed have that stronger upper body area which is a similar build to Dobermans. You usually think of Dobermans as having that lean look as well but I saw two in Kettering, Ohio that were well fed and had a significant amount of weight on them. Just be careful not to over feed any dog because you can see it when they slow down and get this depressed mood when that happens. If I ever had a lab, I would want to be near a lake where he could swim every chance possible.

  3. u weigh ur dog lol

  4. its normal i have 7 labradors and all have lost about 6-10 pounds this summer. i just asked this question to my vet yesterday(he also has a lab) he said its normal and they will gain back that weight this winter

  5. Any dog should lose weight during the summer. However, the skinny part about your lab bothers me. I think your dog has parasites. Take it to a vet and have him checked out.

  6. most dogs tend to lose weight in the summer time because of the heat they usually eat less. It is common for labs to be lean and muscular depending on how active they are.
