  1. Some landscapers do, most don't. There is a big difference between being  a) a landscape designer/architect b) a landscaper and c) a nursery owner.  It's like in the building sector: most architects aren't builders, and most builders aren't electricians. All of these jobs require different studies, and certifications. The nursery business is a very specific type of business, which has to respond to very different regulations than for example a landscaper. Some nurseries do have a landscape designer among their staff and will be able to help you out with smaller projects.  The majority of landscapers buy their plants (at wholesale price) from nurseries.

  2. The answer is both. Some landscapers do own a Nursery as well.Others that are mainly Freelance Landscapers buy their plants wholesale. What you generally do is work out an estimate of the project, including your time, plants, and anything else you might need, like extra labor. You offer this estimate to your customer, then if accepted, buy your plants.

  3. Landscapers get their plants from Wholesale nurseries that deal only with contractors.  There are some Nurseries that the public shops that that offer full service landscaping so in those cases they would be using their own plants.

  4. I work at a wholesale nursery and we sell to landscapers and retailers but do no landscaping. Unless you count palm tree installation. All of the retail nurseries in our area also do landscaping. Except of course the mega chain garden centers like Lowe's and Home Depot. So the answer would be some do and some don't.
