  1. Should you be interested in avoiding poisonous stings, bites and whatnot while in france, lavender is an excellent repellant against mosquitoes and scorpions !

  2. There are many varieties of snakes in France although the only venomous one is the Vipera aspis which is found in the lavender fields of Provence. Although bites of this snake are regular occurrences there have been few reported deaths.

  3. yes, why?

  4. Yes, lavender grows in the south of France, a hot rocky place much appreciated by snakes. Most common are the non venomous whip snakes ('couleuvres' in French) of the Coluber family and the venomous vipers ('vipères' in French) of the vipera family, there's different breeds of each. You also have the very mildly venomous Montpellier snake (couleuvre de Montpellier) not dangerous to Humans.

When you walk around, wear good shoes and stomp harder than usual. You give the snake fair warning and time to get away.

All those snakes are protected species in France.
