Lightning bugs are actually disappearing all over the world.  They think it's mostly due to human encroachment on their habitat regions and light pollution.  Suggestions are to turn off outside lights at night, allow fallen logs to remain (since larvae grow in rotting wood) and it wouldn't hurt to have a body of water nearby, such as a pond.
