  1. Limiting factors, by definition, are biotic or abiotic factors that prevent a population from increasing exponentially. Thus limiting factors alone always decrease a population, because they invoke competition among individuals of the population. Since there is competition, some individuals will be better at overcoming a given limiting factor than other, and are more likely to out-survive the less well-adapted individuals. The demise of less well-adapted individuals leads to a decrease in population size.
