Question:

Do lovebirds really only love each other?

I want to get a new bird. I have always gotten either finches or parakeets. I wanted to get a lovebird. I went into the petstore and asked about them. The guy told me, "The only things lovebirds love, are each other." Then he suggested for me to get a cockatiel, but I couldn't afford it because I only saved up enough for the lovebird. Is this really true?

  1. that is very odd. lovebirds are the more expensive birds over teils.

be warned love birds are noisy and screech a LOT. they are very territorial especially when there are two. they are not always the best people friendly bird, they do better in pairs and they will bond with each other over a human.

i suggest you get some books at the library for free and do some reading up on teils and love birds before you get one.

lovebirds and teils are a whole lot of work than the smaller birds are.

spend time with the bird at the shop to make sure the bird likes you. often it is the bird that chooses it's owners.

once you get the bird you want i highly suggest an avian vet examine the bird before you take it home to check for illness and malnutrition. and from there you can get materials from the vet about your bird.

    best wishes.

  2. Nah; lovebirds can get along fine without a partner if they get plenty of human attention.

Mine, while he doesn't actually like ME, adores my parents.

I say go for it. Lovebirds are great pets.

  3. Yes it is true

  4. They can or they may not if your bird is older they may fight so you may be up for a new cage as well but definatly dont try to put another bird with a love bird, they seem to particularly like to chew the feet off other birds so be very careful there. You can keep a love bird on its own happily though if you give it 30 minutes of attention twice a day, try getting a handraised one or spend the time finishing handraising one yourself they are darling birds and worth the effort, so much character and fun! 5. It's not true... Many first time lovebird owners feel that it is necessary to buy two lovebirds because they have heard that without a mate a single lovebird will wither away and die of loneliness. Who started saying that was either lying or misinformed as lovebirds do just as good as a single bird as they do in pairs.

Although lovebirds do not need another lovebird to share it's cage with it still needs a human to share its colorful life with or else it will wither up and die.

If you buy two birds they will bond with each other and look so cute snuggled up to each other but since they have each other they might not bond to you.

  6. I've seen both cases... I've had friends have lovebirds that were extremly friendly... but I've always seen other friends with them and you couldn't touch them AT ALL they were really mean.  Cockatiels are wonderfully friendly... or even a parakeet (which are cheaper) if they are handled all the time can be wonderful pets.  Hope this helps.

  7. It's not true.

My lovebird came to me in my sleep and told me I was the one for her.

    We were married.

She only lived to be 4 years old, though.

    Sad story.

    ..

No seriously, those birds aren't intellectually inclined. They 'can't' fall in love.
