  1. Yes, and sometimes they even pay to have an article written and placed next to their ad (which they also paid for.) The article, obviously, talks about the benefits of buying certain products. Usually they don't mention them by name, because by law that would be an ad and it would have to say "Advertisement" at the top of the page.

Perfect example: Vacuum X company sells vacuums with extra-long cords and a 3-layer filter systems. So they pay to have an article written about why the best vacuums have extra long cords and 3 layers of filters.

  2. yes, it's called an advertorial.

  3. As the second poster mentioned, there are a number of ways that a magazine can charge companies to place products or product mentions in their publications.

    - The most popular way is by of paid advertising. In this method, the magazine charges the company a set amount for a set amount of space - anywhere from 1/4 page to a full page or more. The rate for this type of placement is based upon the size of the ad and the total circulation of the magazine. The more people who read the magazine, the more it can charge.

    - A second way is through the use of Advertorial. Advertorials look like regular editorial content, but is a bit more "hard sell" in tone and manner. Many times, these will be written as an endorsement by the magazine itself. Advertorials are usually written by the company promoting the product.

    - A third way that products end up in magazines and is NOT paid for, is by way of Public Relations. These are articles that are written by either the company promoting the product and/or the magazine. For example, the magazine may be doing a feature article on Fall Handbags, in which case it might approach various handbag manufacturers for photos of and information about their new fall line. Or, the handbag manufacturer might approach the magazine with the idea of doing the feature story. In either scenario, the magazine dictates how much space it will allocate to showing or mentioning the manufacturer. Sometimes, it may be just a small mention or photo caption. Other times, the entire article may be about one manufacturer.

    I hope this helps.
