Question:

Do male feral cats kill kittens that aren't their own?

I know this is a common practice of a lot of other animals, but the feral she-cat who's been coming around is mates with the feral tom that "owns" my property; yet she has kittens that I'm certain are from another tom that her mate chases away all the time and has beaten before. Even when she's not around her mate isn't really bothered by the kittens. He's not neutered, and the kittens are about "teenager" age. (They're still a bit small, not completely grown up yet.) So I'm just wondering... how come he isn't attacking them or chasing them away? I thought male feral cats did that to even their own offspring?

  1. Toms do kill kittens ... it allows them to breed the cat again.

  2. Cats have no way of telling whether kittens are theirs or someone else's, and in fact queens can have kittens from more than one male at a time! Evidently this particular tom doesn't find these kittens threatening or maybe mama has already made her point to him about leaving them alone.
