I have to help line up some tests for my son, so I was wondering whether students still take the SAT subject tests? Do they still have to take three tests or do schools require fewer tests? What tests are usually required? Can students substitute the ACT test?

  1. Where I live... I only had to take the ACT. But also I applied and am attending a local university.

My couselor adviced us to only take the SAT if we were going out of state to college.  So for the best bet:

Look up the colleges you plan on attending online

Go to there perspective students  page

    Look @ the requirements.

  2. For the top schools, either the ACT (with writing) or the SAT Reasoning Test and 3 SAT Subject Tests (on any given test day you can take up to three subject tests) are required.  Some schools require only one or two subject tests (or none at all) but most competitive schools do.  Some schools even allow three subject test to be substituted for the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT.   It depends on the test and if the school is flexible than it is best to have your son take multiple tests and combinations because most students have a test that works best for them.
