Do mechanics generally accept help around the shop from undergrads?

My dad keeps pushing me to ask around "machinery row" in town for an intern type position working with a mechanic part time, just for some experience while I work on my degree for Diesel tech. Is this common, or is it just a waste of time?

  1. Your big shops  would  most definitely do something like that .I also believe that there would be willing to send you to school for your trade in diesel tech. .I believe that you would have better luck at a big brand name company like GMC- FORD ,DODGE

  2. my dad's a mechanic and he told me that he had a guy that was learning help him. he did hire him later on cause he knew him and stuff..but he told me about how he really helped out the guy..cause when the guy made a mistake, he had to "pay the price" so speaking. some might not wanna take a chance on you. but otherwise, yeah sure. just look interested, determined, and hard-working. cause you might get a job there.(:

  3. Yes, but you prob wont get a job workin on sports cars or building motors.  I'm sure you can find a place where you can change oil, rotate tires, change tires, ext with out any experience.  I have a friend that got a job doing just that and all the experience he had was the 3 year of auto mech we took in highschool.  It won't hurt to ask.  And once you get out of school and get ASE certiffied you can move on up and try finding a job doing what you want.  Good luck.

  4. It all depends on the shop and the person who will be teaching you. Most shops enjoy having extra help around. If you find someone that wants to teach you things and has the time it can be great experience of how a shop runs and what they will expect from you later. I started off just helping someone and 10 years later im a certified auto body tech. The right shop the right person would not be a waste of time even if you just watch how they work.
