  1. Some of them realize it and some of them don't. On some level I think people with down's syndrome and other things like that realize that they are different. A lot of mentally retarded people don't know enough to even realize that they are in their own world.

  2. well i'm sure some of them are aware that they have something wrong with them but the definition of "mentally challenged" is usually a distorted or lack of awareness about their surroundings.

they're not animals, you know. Mentally retarded (in the scientific sense) people have their own realities, even if it doesn't match up with our own

  3. Yes.

  4. I'm a teacher.  I think most at least know they are different and that they can't do things like most people.  Just as anyone who struggles with something would.  However I suppose if someone had a very low IQ they may not realize this.  But I have worked with children who have IQs in the 50s and even they realize they are not as capable as the average child.

  5. if theyre able to understand the concept of being mentally challenged then yes.

  6. The whole point of being mentally challenged is not knowing you are. A normal person would face their challenge because they have the rationality to do so. Mental people do not. I guess they would find out if someone told them, but they probably wouldn't understand it much.

  7. At some point in life they find out...but they deny it for obvious reasons.

Who would like to tell others that they are mentally challenged?

  8. There are all forms of mental challenges.  I would imagine that some people realize what their mental challenges are and some do not see that they are mentally challenged.  You see, no human being is perfect, which is why people are compared to statistically derived standards.  Who is to be the judge that says, "Yes, that is a truly average human being, that is a truly superior human being, and that is a below average human being"?  Such people have problems of their own.  The only thing true of all of us is that we live and at some point transition to another form.  Our atoms are as old as the universe, and will last as long.
