  1. "near abroad"  Does anyone even use that term anymore?

    "Abroad" means anywhere outside your home country.  In this case, Canada and Mexico are "abroad".  "Near" is a relative term.

    But, I think nowadays people say "out of the country".  For example, "She's traveling on vacation out of the country with her family," or "He's out of the country at the moment, but will be back next week."
