Do more men or women tend to be vegetarians/vegans?

I have noticed that, of all the vegetarians/vegans I know, the overwhelming majority of them tend to be female rather than male. I haven't investigated any gender correlation when it comes to the reasons for that culinary choice.

If this is true of you and your acquaintances, any ideas as to why?

Maybe it's because women sometimes want to watch their weight more or be more health-conscious. Also, sometimes they don't care for the taste of meat as much as men do.

I know like 3 vegetarians and they are all girls, I have yet to meet a guy that is.  I think it is because women are more sympothic towards animals and look at it as being mean to the harmless animal.  I on the other hand say give me my huge, juicy, meduim well-done steak!  (My veggie freinds hate eating with me)!

Yes.  I have noticed that too.  

Of all the vegetarians/vegans I know personally, 5 of them are female, and 1 of them is male (he is my boyfriend).  Interesting.  I really do not have anything I can confidently say is the truth as to why though.  Strange.  

What I really can't stand are the male-geared fast food commericals.  "We are men, we eat beef."  What is that all about?  Drives me nuts.

Well women tend to be more sensitive when it comes to killing animals so more women are vegetarians. hope i helped.

I agree with your observation; most vegetarians I know are female, including me. Partly women are more likely to experiment with different diets and to try to eat healthily because of the importance placed on weight and body image, and also society seems to focus on women's health more than men's.

I think there's also a perception that eating meat is somehow "manly"... I've heard people say that they'd bring their daughter up to be vegetarian but they'd want their son to eat meat. I've never really understood that.

I have seen the opposite. But as you have said I haven't done got any serious statistics.

Women here  tend to be vegans when they grow older and when they become religious.
