Do most American Merchant accounts charge a fee if a charge on a credit card is denied? If so, how much?

My gym is claiming I owe them $45 because they tried to charge my credit card 3 times, and it was denied each time, costing them $15 / pop.

I'm not sure why the charge was denied all three times. They say it came back as 'miscellaneous', so they just kept on trying to charge it. Each time incurring a $15 Charge.

I had sufficient funds, and my account was in good standing.

Also this was an EFT payment if that makes a difference.

  1. We've had a merchant account for decades and we've never been charged for credit cards that have been declined. Credit card charges transaction fees only for payments that go through.

But if this is an EFT or wire transfer, then $15 is a normal charge by banks

  2. If you can prove suff. funds then you need to speak with account manager by walking into her office of faxing a copy of your transactions from that bank.

Merchant accounts for larger businesses offer a standard monthly fee to the business, then also can charge you as a consumer. If a staff was not able to correctly put it your info then they should occur the cost and refund you.

You may be better off suggesting a free month or two at the gym for thier error.
