Do most fatal and injury related accidents in the city happen in intersections with street lights?

I heard this somewhere and that 80% of the fatal/injury related city accidents happen within these intersections with street lights. It also said that most happen within 4 seconds of lights changing red or green. How accurate is this? Does anyone know? I only ask this because I trust statistics more when they are referenced to a peer-review academic journal or major data/government organizations (like department of transportation .gov websites).

  1. The data available does not indicate whether or not the intersection where a fatal collision occurred was illuminated or not...Virtually all controlled (with traffic lights) intersections have street lighting as well...I would agree that most fatal mishaps occur within 4 seconds of the traffic light changing, but like you say, nobody really knows for sure...The participants in the event are either too injured to care or deceased

  2. Actually the accidents in this country, and it is only my opinion is because someone got in a hurry and someone was distracted. My sis died at a controlled intersection

  3. look its not like this accidents happn everywere in street roads, highways, insections, junctions traffic singal everywere .acutally the reason behind every accident is only two. one is driver not paying attension and other is of excessive speed thts y accidents happn thts all

  4. Probably because not to many intersections in cities don't have streetlights. If an accident is going to happen in an intersection in a city, it most likely will have a streetlight. It's kind of like the statistic that says 75% percent of lottery winners use the quick-pick feature, when in reality 75% of all tickets sold are quick-picks.

  5. More at intersections for sure, way more traffic and more distractions......

  6. Most fatal accidents do not happen at intersections due to the relativly low speeds of the cars. fatalites are much more likey to happen on a highway or interstate.
