Do most marines trying to become recon mariens start with a few years of basic infantry?

Yes, well my bro did, but his best friend didnt. My brother went infantry for a few years, i think it was 3, then he went recon and shortly after he was sent to iraq. His buddy he grew up with went straight to recon, and he actually became force recon.

Yes, you need to be in the infantry to go to Recon. You must first pass the Recon Indoc which is a series of tests to ensure you are able to handle the eventual training.
