Do motorcycle intercoms between riders connect with a wire, or are they wireless?

For example, can you buy an intercom between two separate riders on different bikes, or do intercoms have to have a wire connecting one person to the other in order to speak, therefore restricting and intercom between rider and passenger? Thanks.

  1. there are all kinds of bike to bike wireless comm systems. Chatterbox makes em, as do several other companies. On my ultra, both headsets plug into the bike so we can talk person to person, or I can talk on the CB thru it, as well as listening to the stereo.CD player. both rider and passenger can control the volume in their headset. When I rode long distance on a bike that didn't have an intercom, I bought one online from Dennis Kirk that I wore on my belt and both helmets plugged into it.  Riding on seperate bikes, you can get intercoms systems from JC whitney online,J&PCycle online,Denniskirk online or find them at most Cycle shops.

  2. nope there all wireless now

you canget them where they work like a cb(push2talk) or where they are on all the time and tuned to a specific frequiency(this is the most commonly used because y6ou can add many riders easily)

this is taken a step further w bluetooth where you can make and recieve calls through the headset and if you stay on the same frequency have a conference call like situation between the group and the person you called/has called

    goodluck

  3. Sean,

Let me take a minute to explain to you the new technology available to new riders who want to be able to talk to one another as well as take phone calls via blue tooth or listen to your music. If you have a passenger on your bike, you can actually communicate either wirelessly or you can get a short audio plug and connect to each chatterbox.

There is a system on the market now called Chatterbox.

I personally have the X2. I have listed a few of the following models in which will give you a basic idea of what each chatterbox has the ability to do.

Chatterbox introduces the new and improved GMRS X1 Bluetooth edition. We took the most powerful unit on the market and gave it the Bluetooth Technology that everyone has been asking for. Now you can pair up to two accessory devices at a time without the use of wires. Answer your Bluetooth cell phone, listen to your Ipod/Mp3 player (w/Bluetooth adapter) or get voice prompted directions from your bluetooth GPS. The new features also include a Hi-Fi sound noise reducing headset and 22 channels to choose from when communicating.

Chatterbox introduces our most technologically advanced unit ever. We took our most powerful communicator and combined it with our most sophisticated features to create the most powerful (up to 5 miles) unit on the market. The GMRS X1 has a large illuminated display and is VOX (voice activated) or PTT (push to talk) with a built in intercom for talking to a passenger. Other features include cellular phone input (*call for compatibility), audio input with full stereo sound, radar detector, and voice prompted GPS input. All of these features packed into a tough water resistant casing.

Chatterbox introduces the FRS-X2 model with noise reduction. The FRS-X2 has a large illuminated display and is VOX (voice activated) or PTT (push to talk) with a built in intercom for talking to a passenger. Other features include cellular phone input (*call for compatibility), audio input with full stereo sound, radar detector, and voice prompted GPS input. All of these features packed into a tough water resistant casing.

  4. Both. Check out Nady Foxfire.

  5. both, while bluetooth has come out (wireless), wired systems are still popular, like motocommm. easier to install headsets while wireless can require special helmets.

  6. I ride with a HOG chapter as one of the road captains. We all have CBs, as do many of the other riders, just so they can listen and/or comment. Each bike has its own CB. Headsets can either go into a helmet or you can get a cage system that allows you to use it without a helmet.  The neat thing about the CB is that we also can communicate with the truckers in the area. We do connect our headsets to the CBs with wire connection. The other bonus about the CB- mine has weather channels.

Sorry, I don't know about talking with my passenger with the CB. I just talk to him or her.

If you go the CB route, use a channel other than 19 or 9. When we are riding in a group, we use channel 1.

I'm adding a link to the company from which I bought my system.

  7. both

  8. you can actually get both, depending on the money you are looking at spending. There are even some available from the factory like honda. That use a link built directly to the bike itself.
