  1. Yes . The slot can be decibel in various places in the swing. Sam Snead used to describe getting into the slot at the top of his backswing. Many reputable players and teachers talk about the slot during the downswing during an area from about shoulder height to waist height . It simply refers to getting the club in the correct position.

  2. Second question first:

The slot is a term used for the plane your hands should be on during the downswing.

    First question:

When I give lessons, I teach hips start the downswing, and arms start the downswing. They can do at different times, or together. This depends on your arm speed, and hip speed. If someone tells you that one MUST start before the other they are WRONG! Your first motion down/through should depend on your personal abilities.

Side note: If you 'zip' your hips to start your downswing the club will generally move outside the 'slot' .. or swing plane -causing a duck hook or slice. This is easily demonstrated in person.

  3. WRONG, FLATASTIC IS WRONG. Your HIPS start the downswing and yes your arms do in a sense 'fall' into the slot position. Below is a video of how to start the downswing, and the second one is how to get in the slot position. But just remember this, UPPER body STARTS the backswing, LOWER body STARTS the downswing. Keep it in the short grass : )

(p.s. the guy in the second video calls it 'the delivery' position which is another name for the slot.)

  4. Generally the slot is the position you want the shaft to be in at the top of your backswing, and yes it should reach that position before you turn you left hip to start the downswing.
