Question:

Do my fish have TB? (pics)?

Ok, so I've lost 2 fish in the last month. They are eating, swimming around. Not real "signs" of anything wrong.

Except this: The first fish we lost was the worst. She started looking really thin, and then almost hunched back. The 2nd female we lost, was just thin looking. I asked about this because now my other fish (I thought it was just 1, but it looks like all of them now), are getting the same thing. But because describing it is just making me more worried. Here are some pics, maybe I'm just over reacting, or it is something else.

And a new symptom (if you can call it that). Our white fish has always been 100% white. She is now getting red fins, some on her face, and on her tail! But other than physical "looks" my fish are acting normal.

Our yellow one is starting to hunch, like the 1st one. :(

We also have 20+ fry in the tank, and a CAE. My boyfriend suggest just taking all the adult platys out (and basically killing them as humanly as you can). But if its something as bad as TB wouldn't all the fish have it?

  1. I've just been through this same thing with my platie, mollies and swords.  I thought TB too and then did some more research and found out that it can also be an internal parasite.  My husband bought 3 white mollies from Walmart and put them in my tank as a surprise without quarantining them!  They all died with the clamped fins and hunched bodies.  Then other fish started to have the same symptoms.

I treated with Jungle Parasite Clear twice and it seems to be under control now.  I'm not sure if that was the cure or if the sick ones just died and it was over but it might be worth a try.  It's not expensive and they are just fizzing tablets you drop in the tank.  Good luck with your tank.

  2. yep you fish has tb

  3. The best thing to do is to ask at a local pet shop that sell fish, they should have different medicines for fish diseases they should know what the symptoms mean .  When you say TB what do you mean by this, because fish can't get tuberculosis.  Whatever is killing your fish will be in the tank's water so taking out the adults will not make a difference.

  4. The problem affecting your fish doesn't appear to be the common form of fish Tuberculosis. That is usually manifested by a "hollow belly" sort of look, ads a long slow period of wasting. If your fish have TB there is no cure.

After taking a second look at the photos and re-reading your description of the disease it may well be the Mycobacter that causes Fish Tuberculosis. The typical "shrunken belly" is not evident in the photos at first look. The very bad news is that this bacteria is almost impossible to completely remove from a tank. Even a complete tear-down and bleaching may not get them all. This is because the TB bacillus has the capability to encyst,or form an almost impenetrable coating around itself. This is similar to the TB that affect humans, although the "bugs" are quite different.

The spinal curvatures that are becoming evident in your fish could possibly be genetic, and therefore also incurable. The various treatments will have no effect on the problem.

Worse than all of your fish having the disease, your tank has it and it will be very difficult to cure.

    I'm very sorry.

  5. Your fish are platies. If you mean tuberculosis by TB, then they obviously don't because only humans can get that, but if you mean something else I don't know what. They probably have ich and are most definitely stressed out (as I can see on the fish in the first image.) Put some aquarium salt in the water (platies need some, only 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons) make sure you are not overcrowding the tank (only 1 platy per every 2 gallons of water) and make sure the water is at 79 degrees. Also add NovAqua, a disease preventative, to the water as well as StressZyme which you can buy most places that sell fish items. If there is signs of disease, treat with medicine, QuIck Cure is the best brand, and if they do for sure have Ich, perform 3 percent water changes daily for the next week and a half using gravel vacuums and treat all the incoming water with Dechlorinater and NovAqua and aquarium salt, and to learn more about ich and telling if your fish have it then look it up online. If that doesn't work, do what mokey said.

The full name for ich, which is a common parasitic infection, is Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, so look that up on google I'm sure you'll find enough info to tell if your fish have it or not.

    Good Luck!
