Question:

Do my parakeets need daily time out of their cages?

I have 2 parakeets. The female one is blue and the male one is green. They're both about 3 months old. They're very active. I've heard that parakeets need daily time out of their cages to spend time with the family. My green one would let me take him out of the cage. But my blue one wouldn't.

Whenever I try to take her out of the cage, or even touch her, she would refuse and start to panic. And she would also try to bite me or struggle to get herself out of my reach. Is that normal for a young, female parakeet?

  1. We have two parakeets ( blue female and a green male, just like yours).

Parakeets need to be trained in order to be comfortable with people handling them.  One danger of letting your birds out is that they panic and fly all over - and will try to fly through closed windows unless you close the blinds.  For this reason you need to keep their wings clipped.

Here is info on training your parakeets:  http://www.lisashea.com/petinfo/articles...

    All the best.

  2. Sounds like one of these was hand fed and not the other?

You must continue to get the green out several times a day or he will never come out.  Be sure their flight feathers are trimmed.  Take the green one into your room and spend an hour a day with him just one on one.  Put him into your shirt so you can pet him and let him know it is okay.  If he is not tame it will take a long time to do so.

  3. yes they need at least an hour or two hot of cage but u can wait till u get them trained if u want but i just let mine out and train him while he roams around
