Question:

Do new brakes squeak?

My dad did my brakes/rotors 2 weeks ago. Now I have 2 problems. About a week after they were installed they began squeaking while slowing from 10-0 mph. The second issue is that the front passenger wheel sounds like something is loose. But he took the wheel off 4 times and tighten everything?

I don't expect an answer for the second thing, but is the brake squeaking normal for a bit for new brakes?

  1. sometimes they do if not broken in right they will graze over and casue a squeaking.. rusty rotors also do it... and many times its the type of pads.... not big deal if you know the pads are new.... might try and scrape off the rust a roun d the edge of rotors where pads ride or grease the back of pads

  2. There could be two reasons the brakes are squeaking. 1 would be if really cheap brake pads were used(you get what you pay for). another thing that could be causing this is if the brakes were not worn in properly(yes there technically is a procedure) if they get to hot from hard braking when they are new, you will glaze the rotors and they will be noisy until the rotors are replaced or refinished.

  4. it can be. If your uncomfortable, bring it to a shop, if theres nothing wrong it might cost you nothing to maybe 15.00, if there is something wrong they will give you a quote, and your dad can fix it.

  5. It's a common problem that can be corrected easily. Most brake pads come with thin brake shims that are glued to the steel side of the pads that normally stop squealing. If your do or do not have the shims do the following: Remove the brake pads and spray both sides with CRC Brake clean. Make sure the steel side of the pads are really clean and dry. Spread a liberal coating of CRC Brake Quiet (high temperature orange silicone) .090 thick on the steel side of the pads. Let it dry for 20 -30 minutes before reassembling the pads.

CRC Brake quiet acts as a harmonic absorption barrier between the brake piston and the back side of the caliper. It'll take care of your squealing problem. In the future always use ceramic brake pads as they don't normally squeal and they already have shims on the back side. They also don't grind away metal on the surfaces your cast iron brake rotors.
