Question:

Do new wireless routers output maximum speed?

I've been looking into another router (wireless) but thought I'd ask first. My computer is connected through a router with d/l speeds at about 15mbps.. Connected directly to the modem, it's around 22mbps. The router is a few months old (Linksys BEFSR41), I assume it's just a bad router.

Would getting a new router that's wireless hopefully eliminate the reduced speed? I'm looking at another linksys router (bad idea? WRT54GL) with great reviews and no complaints about reduced speeds. So is it just the router that's bad? I can't see newer routers actually reducing speed between computers.

And as a side note, is Wireless G sufficient for gaming?

  1. I think you mean kbps, 22 or 15 mbps would cost over $100 per month.

Wireless is always slower that with a cable, you can increase your speed by upgrading your wireless adapter to a better one.

Your speed is good enough for gaming, and normal for loss over wireless. You can also try using a high gain antenna. If your computer is not portable, then you can also use a wire.
