Question:

Do nicknames have to be based on your real name?

I want to call myself Sora for school next year because I want to be called something different. My real name is Sandra. I want to call myself something else just to see what it would be like to be called something else for one school year.

Sora means sky in Japanese, but it doesn't really have any connection to my name.

My middle names are Lucinda and Grace-I don't like Grace and Lucinda's too long for me.

In your opinion, do nicknames (I'm talking about the names people call you by) have to be based on your real name? There isn't much to do with Sandra-I don't like the name Sandy. What nicknames that relate to my own name (either first or middle) could I call myself?

Also, just so you know, I don't like Lucy.

  1. definitely not my nickname is moe and its no where close to stephanie, but everyone calls me it in school. There are plenty of people in my school who have weird nick names. i think you should go for it sora sounds really pretty.

  2. In my opinion, they don't but would make more sense to be called something that is close to your real name. A nickname could also be based on your personality. You could call your self Sandy-Lu (Lu is for Lucinda) Sora is nice and it has a good meaning. But, it's all up to you.

  3. Nope, not at all. Nicknames don't need to be based on your real names. Maybe your personality, or what you look like.

For e.g Miley Cyrus' real name is Destiny or Hope or something. But she was called Miley since babyhood because she's a sMILEY baby, get it?

I think Sora is a lovely nickname for you, besides it sounds a little like your name Sandra :)

  4. they dont have to be. my friend goes by ally and her name is margret....if you like it that's all that matters

  5. No I dont think your nick-name has to be based on your real name. My co-workers nickname is Bear....but his real name is Josh....so no relation between them two.

  6. of course they don't

    they can be completely unconnected

they can be to do with how you behave, or a private joke, or a movie character you remind people of, or pretty much anything that just comes about! it's very hard to initiate your own nickname though, usually your friends invent them as they get to know you. unless you introduce yourself for the first time as a certain name - are you starting a new school?

  7. No they don't ...nicknames are name that represent you. But I don't think teachers will call you anything other than your real name. But your friends could.

  8. No. My nickname does not relate to my real name at all.

  9. I think it's okay to go by a name that's not based off of your real name.  It's not like you are expecting people to call you "Almighty Thunder Cat" or anything.  :-)  I have friends with nicknames that are totally based off something else.

    For example,

Adam is called Sly by most people

Becky is called Joja by most people

Anna is called Tig by most people

I think Sora is even pretty close to Sandra.  Go for it. :)

Oh, and if you ask them to, teachers WILL call you Sora.

  10. My name is one that can be chopped into many nicknames, which is fortunate.

    Cassandra could also be

+Cassie [which is the most used nick name]

    +Cass

    +Sandra

    +Sandy

But I had [and still have] many nick names that have absolutely nothing to do with my name.

  11. Gracie or

    Lewie

  12. I think you should use your middle name. It is so beautiful and too short in it you could go by Luci or Luz which means light in Spanish. I don't think you should try and change who you are. Good luck.
