  1. Just call down to the engine room to warm up the engines and you're ready to go in about an hour.

  2. more than likely there is a security code required that the captain and co-captain know. Keys are to easy to be stolen. key only reason the Keys were invented is as security measure, and passwords are just as good.

  3. ok   as a chief engineer i must tell you that it all depends on the type of engines the ship has............ some  take a lot of compressed air to turn them over to start.............  some  start electricaly  either with a switch or a button........ and some of the older ones took a long time to start as you had to get up steam  and open lots of valves to get them going........and that meant  getting the fires going first to make the steam to start the engines

  4. They require duplicate procedures for security...whether duplicate codes entered by separate individuals or or duplicate keys in two separate switches....

  5. Nope, all they require is a guy in a white uniform with a hat that has a lot of gold stuff on it to yell an order into an intercom for the engine room crew to start the engines.

No keys there either, just a buncha guys turning valves and hitting switches. Keys just wouldn't be practical-could ya imagine ol' fancy-hat dropping them overboard in the middle of the ocean? :D  That'd ruin yer day!
