  1. There are two types of online course, synchronous and asynchronous.

In a fully synchronous course you generally "go to class" at the same time as a classroom somewhere and watch the lecture via webcam and participate in real time.  This is far less common than it used to be.

In a fully asynchronous course you will generally have assignments based on the week with deadlines throughout the week.  It may be that you must join in discussion threads three days each week - it's up to you which three and what time.  Or you may need to watch a streamed video - you watch whenever is good for you.

Some online courses are entirely self-paced.  You are given a time-frame such as a semester or even a full year and a list of assignments.  You complete the assignments on your own schedule.

There are also hybrid courses; part classroom/part online.  These are becoming very common.  I've not had a classroom course in over a year that didn't include some significant online component.

Assignment deadlines in an online course are tight.  The number one reason for course drops online is getting behind in assignments.  Since you're not attending a lecture on a certain day at a certain time, it's easy to procrastinate.  You have to stay self-motivated all of the time.
