Your instead of You're

There instead of They're

There's a ton of others too, i'd rather not list them. I know it's the internet, but why don't people (for the most part) follow any rules of the English language on the web?

  1. Actually, yes, it bothers me a lot.  I think that people are losing the ability to communicate. Care should be taken in how one represents oneself.

  2. For the most part yes. But then again, I get lazy myself at times.

  3. In you, I have found a kindred spirit.  I, too, have always been a devotee of proper English, which includes spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and proper word usage.  However, if you are anywhere near my generation, you will note that English has become a lost art, for the most part.  I think there are several reasons for this, but some of the principal ones are: (1) lower educational standards (2) laziness (3) the casualness and speed of our modern technological world with its electronic devices, including, but not limited to, the internet, cell phones, and other devices for the purpose of broader and instant communication.

I have to admit though, that many people on here do not claim English as their native language.  Those people I excuse, because I think they are really trying, and I can put myself in that situation.  I wouldn't do much better in an unfamiliar foreign language.

The solution?  I really don't think there is one, unless we go back to the good old days of the dunce cap and the hickory stick!  Gads, did I really say that?  I guess that really gives away my age, but we did learn things back then--without the aid of electronic, hand-held devices.

  4. Yeah, to some extent they do.  I think what bothers me most though is people who use the term "ur", especially as a replacement for both your and you're.  It is just incredibly lazy.

  5. Yes, they annoy me.

But so do people who spell programme "program".

  6. Yes, it drives me nuts!  So do poor spellers.

  7. Thank you! I thought I was the only one! Do they realize that they make it more challenging to understand them when they constantly abbreviate and phonetically spell words?

I got this in response to a question about disciplining my puppy:

"try keeping a spray bottle with water near. when he do behave bad spray he with a sharp spray. this can correct the behavor."

It's so bad it's funny. Brilliant idea but poorly-executed response!

  8. Yes, grammatical errors and spelling mistakes make me angry. I think the reason most people make these errors is because they see the internet as an informal way of communicating and dey tink it's cool to soun like a rapper - which it isn't!
