    Your red plant still has green chlorophyll that does the photosynthesis that produces oxygen. Red pigments in the cell wall hide the green color.

    Primitive cells that lack chlorophyll produce poisonous hydrogen sulphide gas (ie the slime around hot springs)

    ps did you know that chlorophyll and hemoglobin in our blood are very similar chemically - chlorine gives chlorophyll its green color, iron the red color of blood. After all we evolved from plant life!
