Broad question there Tim.  In the Paula Abdul song the answer is definitely yes.  In society in general I would say mostly no.  In chemistry mostly no.  In physics mostly no.  When cooking generally no.  In Latin-derived languages mostly yes.  In European, Sino, Jewish and Arab languages definately no.  In the case of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy definately yes.

It depends upon what subject you are referring to. If I was to answer this based upon relationships, then the answer would still be a yes and no. You can have to people that are polar opposites in nature (one is very optimistic and the other pessimistic). They can balance each other by bringing the other up and down to a more comfortable balance. Yet, given that same situation it may not work for another couple because the optimistic could be repulsed by the pessimistic negative attitude and the pessimistic could be annoyed at the always positive optimistic individual.

So it all depends upon the "subject" you are talking about.
