  1. Yes to the first two (you do need glasses, that is £150 please), no to the last.

And I have read of arsonist firefighters, and nurses who have deliberately caused illness to their patients even murder, and the same for doctors.

And patients who have feigned illness.

    Who can we trust ?

Plumbers, 'helpful' garage mechanics, MOT testers (we can repair this for £££) ,tyre fitters (you do need  4 new shock absorbers), insurance company's, the big banks and their lawyers, politicians, newspapers,TV phone in voting ,electric and gas suppliers charges...........

  2. Yes I think there are. I don't doubt dentists carry out un needed work too. It's a fact of life that people will use the services and products we must have as exploits.

  3. I will say a NO to all of these.

  4. First one is definitely true! there are opticians out there who tell you that you need glasses when you don't

  5. yep and milkmen sneak into your house and steal all your dairy products ;-)

  6. i think all 3 do it, more the dentist though, Ive had experience with my dentist doing it to me, well the medical aid sorted him out.

  7. I'd say no. It would be painfully obvious if an optitician said you need glasses, you bought them, put them on, but didn't notice a difference in your eyesight...

  8. I would like to think that in the medical professions the doctor/prescriber has you and your health in their best interest. Remember that they may recommend things (devices, treatments etc) to you, but it is ultimately your choice whether or not to proceed with what they suggest.

I think it is best to have confidence in the professionals that you see and to build up some trust for these people that have earned their titles in their respective fields.

This isn’t to say that business minds do not exist in these professions, they do, but you should be able to identify what is medically necessary and what is considered optional.

The way I look at is that I would rather hear more recommendations from the doctor on ways to improve my situation (vision, oral health etc), rather than less.

Just remember that YOU are always the one that gets to decide just what you pay for and what you go through. However, you should really try to never doubt a doctors recommendation or risk having the issue be worse down the road!

  9. with the optician thing i would say no cos my eyes were goin weird on me so i knew i was havin problems. the dentist thing i could say maybe cos son had been goin to a private one for 6 months cos they had patience with him but as soon as we took him to a nhs dentist she said oh he has to have a filling private dentist said there was nothin wrong with his teeth. the glaziers thing no unless the company desperate for work.

  10. This behavior is definitely not the norm.  However, you can't say there are not any "bad seeds" in any profession.  Yes I'm sure this behavior has occurred before, but trust me I wouldn't loose sleep over it!

  11. It would be really difficult for an Optician to BS your eye results and to provide a prescription.  You would know when you wore the corrective lenses that something was wrong.

I actually watched a TV special where a dentist was caught stating that there was more wrong with several patient's teeth than what was actually wrong.  This would be much harder to catch though.  I do not think this is a regular practice for most dentists.

I am not sure on the glaziers and windows thing.
