Do oral surgeons ever put people under for wisdom teeth extractions?

I have to get my wisdom teeth out soon, and I want, nay need, to find an oral surgeon who is willing to completely anesthetize me. Just the thought of needles anywhere near my gums makes me start crying and shaking. Do oral surgeons ever completely put people under, or am I **** out of luck?

  1. I just got them out friday, and yup, they do put you out.

  2. Most put their patients out. Don't stress. Just tell them you want to be knocked out for it. However, it will cost more, if you don't have insurance. :)

    Good luck!

  3. Yes, in fact I believe that's the standard practice.  You would probably be more hard-pressed to find an oral surgeon who would perform the extraction WITHOUT putting you under.

  4. some dentists do if the person is extremely susceptible to pain.

    it depends on the dentist.

  5. I was a nervous wreck when I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled.  I spoke with the oral surgeon and told him how I felt.  I was able to be put under, and had all 4 removed at the same time.  I needed to have them all done at once, because I was worried that I would chicken out and not go back.  I was knocked out, I didn't feel anything and I don't remember anything.  Talk to a few different oral surgeons, you should be able to find one that will work with you.

  6. Depends on how bad the situation is, worse it is more likely to get a general anesthetic. If it's not that impacted they'll drug you up so much you won't remember it anyhow, probably a combination of nitrous oxide and something else they have you take before you come.

  7. I had to have it done at the hospital. I was put out. I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth. They can usually tell by your xrays whether the insurance will cover the cost of the hospital.
