Question:

Do oral surgeons have to attend med school after dental school?

I'm extremely confused... I read on-line that only hospital-based training is required (residency) for a dentist to complete a specialty in oral surgery, but many oral/maxi programs state that the dentist will have received a MD, as well as, a certification at the time of graduation. Can someone just clarify this for me? It would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Some programs have a MD/ OMFS concurrently...

They will then have both degrees.

Otherwise they are just certified in Oral Surgery and are licensed to perform oral and maxiofacial surgery in a hospital... (but are not an MD)

All the OMFS programs are hospital-based.
