  1. yes. mcdonald's is almost everywhere so is pizza hut (it tastes different in other countries they change the taste to meet the tastes of each country)

  2. Yes, here in Turkey we have countless American style restaurants and I'm not only talking about the usual fast food places but also  American-style diners, grill houses and fancy restaurants. Especially in big cities of Turkey. For example, we have Californian style restaurants, most poular being the chain called "Ivy". TGI Friday's also have a couple of branches.

Most popular American dishes in Turkey are Buffalo wings, ribs and of course, burgers.

Also, nearly 50% of the Italian restaurants in Turkey are influenced from New York style Italian restaurants.

And Starbucks...OMG, nearly in every neighborhood in big cities there is at least 2 Starbucks.

I'm also familiar with France and Belgium. To tell the truth they are a bit snobbish about American food. Big American food chains are hard to find in those two countries. Except McDonalds and Pizza Hut.

But not all Europe is like them, for example in Germany there are also lots of American restaurants.

P.S: I don't understand the number of thumbsdowns at every single answer, what a freaky situation, considering that we are only talking about food.....

  3. I seem to recall that the original Hard Rock Cafe in London was conceived as a place where Americans could get American food (e.g. cheeseburgers and French Fries).

If you consider pizza an American food, then certainly the Japanese have "Japanicized" it.

  4. There's so much I could say on this question!

I can't answer for every country out there, but I've spent time in Guatemala, Mexico, Japan, Tibet, and Beijing (China).  Soo...I can answer for what I saw there, but others may be different.

Other than restaurants that actually started in the US (McD's, Pizza Hut, etc) I don't know if they have specifically American restaurants, but there are typical American foods that you find available a lot of places (no, not tourist joints) mixed in with the other offerings. Hamburgers and Pizza are the usual suspects, but there's also a few surprises in there too, partly a result, as you guessed, of making American food to their tastes.

Example that came to mind as soon as i read your question: Omrice! It's a very popular and common food in Japan. The name actually comes from the English 'omelette' and 'rice' (yes, despite rice being Asian way before it was Western). It's an omelette stuffed with rice that's been mixed with ketchup, and more ketchup poured on top. If that doesn't sound *inspired by* America or one of our close relatives, I don't know what does. Could I bring myself to try it while I was there? h**l no.

Pancakes seem surprisingly popular in both Japan and Mexico (very common in Mexico to see entire restaurants dedicated to them) but then on the other hand that's quite European as well as American, so maybe that's how they got in.

Sometimes too they take "American" foods and use them in ways we never would have thought of. Mayo is *everywhere* in Japan. Corn-and-mayonaise sushi, mayo for dipping tempura, mayo making a lovely design on your pizza.

On one last random end note: flying into Beijing, the first thing I see coming off the plane? A Starbuck's.  I do not exaggerate. It was in the airport, the first shop we came across. Those wacky Communists.

  5. Yeah.. the fast food restaurants..

One of my fav is Carl's Jr.

  6. I am a former chef with 27 years experience. I was trained at the New York Institute of Culinary Arts. I am an educator extraordinaire and have worked at major hotels. I am a certified small kitchen appliance reviewer and am practiced at both Asian and European Cuisines. Believe it or not, I have cooked for the military and in 4 star restaurants. I am a fully trained pastry chef, as well, as well as a saucier. I noticed your little problem and have deigned to help you. I'm sorry. What was the question again?

When I was in Japan these Japanese friends of mine kept taking me to this one restaurant. I finally said, "Say, what's the name of this place?" They said, "Denny's". Tee hee hee. I didn't know it was American food!

  7. Well since the us was founded from other cultures...I'm sure that we just have a mix of everything.

  8. What is American food?

    Hot Dogs? Nope... German.

    Hamburgers? German again.

    Apple Pie? Maybe.

We don't really have a national type of food other than McDonalds and BK and the like. Fast food is our deal.

We tend to be not only the melting pot of people but also of foods. We eat and incorporate all different foods into our culture. That's what makes America so great. We incorporate everyone and everything into our culture and blend it all together into greatness.

  9. Yes.  On Food Network they featured a restaurant serving southern style soul food.  I think it was in England.

American restaurants in other parts of the world will likely be focused on one particular style of cuisine.  Southern, Cajun, BBQ, Southwestern.

  10. mcd's, kentucky fried, and lets not forget the king

  11. the only thing we've got are McDonalds and Burger-king and they both suck. No seriously they do. And we don't have an American restaurant cause what you probably call American food (except fast-food) is just normal food. Believe me it is. I prefer the middle-east and Italian cuisine. They at least have their own taste.

  12. If you are thinking Fast Food, Like McDonalds, KFC and the like, they're worldwide (although in India, McDonalds does NOT have any meat products in their menu of items)

If you're talking about "chain restaruants" like Olive Garden, Ruby Tuesdays, Applebee's and the like, some have gone international, but procurring the foodstuffs that are required in the menu items is difficult or impossible to get in other countries.....

There have been a handful of "chains restaurants" that have attempted to make the leap internationally, but have failed miserabley, due to lack of interest......

  13. yes .they call them kfc, macdonalds, burgerking

  14. We're currently in Germany and yes, they have "American Restaurants".... well, they're more like Diners.  Usually, they have all sorts of burgers, salads, chilli and foods of that sort.  I haven't been able to find a "fancy" restaurant yet.  They desperately attempt to get as close to what they think the "original" should taste like (... but fail horribly). In the States we sometimes have actual Italians working at the restaurants, but here we didn't find a single American yet...

And then there's, of course,  McDonald's, Subway, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC and I even found a A&W up in Berlin.

The menue differs a little though.... over here for example they have a "Chicken Burger" at McDonald's with a sweet&sour sauce.... sounds weird, tastes delicious!  But for the biggest part, they have the same as stateside.

  15. Typical American restaurants world wide are part of major US fast food chains: McDonald, Burger King, Kentucky fried chicken

Non-fast food chains like Danny's are popular in Japan.

At many high class motels, you can order steaks. In India, at 5-star restaurants, you can buy steaks. But, the steaks are made of water-Buffalo meat.

Most popular American food sold world wide outside United States is a hamburger followed by a bean burger. The beverage is Coca Cola followed by Pepsi cola.

  16. i agree with the person above lol im gonna ramble about this

there aren't many specific american restaurants but there are many different takes on food chains:

    pizza huts

    mcdonalds

    starbucks

mcdonalds in india has something called the "maharaja burger" because hindu is widely spread and they do not eat meat.  But everything non vegetarian is virtually the same

though i do wonder some times if the preparation is different (like if they cooked the fries in a wok or the buns in a tandoor) but thats just my imagination

Mcdonalds is so widely spread in china that some people there think that it is native to china.

most of these places dont have the same feel though.  In japan, the mcdonalds can have 3 stories and and the starbucks are more like  restaurants.  The Mcdonald's most popular food is fried Chicken in China, because that's along the lines of what they eat there.  Also the McD's in Argentina has amazing meat
