  1. I think Mac got it pretty much right, except it is not based on the majority usually but the plurality.  


  2. Yes, to great extent.  They reflect the moral codes agreed upon by the majority of citizens.  

    For example, most citizens feel public nudity is immoral, so there are laws against it.   There are laws against shouting profanities in the street, same-s*x marriages, public urination, beating a child or wife,  stealing, cheating, etc.  These are all based upon collective morality.

    That is why it's so stupid to pretend that Judeo/Christian traditions have nothing to do with our society - the moral code that stems from that religious tradition has shaped and still informs our legal system!

  3. Yes, they do.  Now please do your own homework.  If you turn in someone else's answer as if it were your own, you would be cheating.  Is that very ethical??
