Do outbaord boat motors charge the battery?

I have a 90 horse Johnson 1981 model does it have a altonator built in or do I need to charge the battery after every use this is the first outboard motor I have owned

  1. Yes it should charge on its own. either by alt or an internal stator and regulator


  2. It should charge the battery

    It may not have a visible alt but it's flywheel sits in a set of coils that charge the bat

    Yours may or may not have this

    Take a volt meter and measure the volts before and after you start the motor.

    If it's charging you'll see a voltage higher than 12.6 while the engine is running

  3. They do "maintain" battery voltage while running, but are not designed to charge a dead battery.

  4. yes they do charge the battery, however it charges very slowly, if you have a lot of electronics or large amp  and stereo sytejn it might not be able to keep up

  5. you are in a much better position if you charge the battery separately and not depend upon the motor to keep it up.
