  1. Most successful greyhounds pay the bills for the other dogs an owner has that never race, race poorly, etc.  In thoroughbred racing an average owner expects to lose fifty cents on every dollar they put in.  Greyhound owners don't have the same ratio, but there are very few (if any) that rely on their dog's winnings to live.

  2. As long as a dog is "racing" about once a week in normal graded events,it should not cost the owner very much as they all get appearance money, and being graded they make a bit extra every so often so they just about break even. At this level you can only make good money by betting it when you know it has a chance of winning.

Better class dogs run in what they call "open" races where much more money is at stake, but conversely the chance of the dog winner are less. Best "open" being the Greyhound Derby where they can win about £500,000.

You then have the potential income, after racing, of breeding money. Money for Good Stud Dogs servicing good high class b*****s.
