Question:

Do painting stripes on wall make room look bigger or smaller?

I have a small bedroom (estimating) 10x14. Ceilings are 9 Ft. I want to paint the room lavender and then stripe (30"wide) a with a deeper purple either on the bottom half or top half of the room (all the way around) and I will have a white chair molding around seperating the solid and striped half of the room. I am afraid this will make the room look smaller, does anyone know if it will and also should I put the stripes on the top or bottom half of the room? I'm leaning toward the bottom half. Thanks for any help.

  1. I think it depends on how large your strips are and the colors that you use. The best idea is to go to the local paint store-Home Depot or where ever- and tell them the exact same thing you've told us. They should be able to help you.

  2. Vertical stripes in a room will give the illusion that it is taller. I would personally stripe the top half, but I saw them do the bottom on an episode of "Get It Sold" on HGTV & it looked good. According to the website, that episode will air again on August 13:
