  1. Only in zoos, though it's possible one may have escaped or been released by a private collector. A panther is not a species in its own right, it is simply a melanistic leopard - that is, a leopard with an excess of the dark pigment melanin, resulting in an almost totally black coat (the markings will still show up against the background in certain lights). Leopards are found in Africa and Asia, with melanism being more common in Asia.

    You may be confusing panther with Florida panther, which is a subspecies of puma (also called cougar or mountain lion). Pumas are found across the US, and are capable of travelling long distances - it's possible this is the animal you saw.
