  1. Yes. And heated Teflon will kill them too.  If you have teflon pot's or pans do not use them in your house at all. Cleaners have fumes that will kill them as well Fabreeze, bleach and cleaners of that sort are bad for birds. Your vet can give you a list of things that are harmful to birds. You can also get a book on parakeets and that will have a list in it.

The following website has a list of plants that are poisonous to birds:

This one has common household toxins:

    Good luck!

  2. Small birds are very susceptible to fumes. We used a bleach based  cleaner for mold in  our bathroom and our cockatiels cage was near by. That was all it took. 3. Yes. Birds are very sensitive to many cleaning products especially ones containing bleach, ammonia, any aerosols, paints, perfumes, and teflon pans that overheat. Paints are very bad. If going to use around birds must ventilate well and put bird in another room behind closed doors. To clean cage should use only bird safe products that are sold for birds and cages in pet stores. A good one is organic called p**p off. Works well. Birds have such sensitive respiratory systems due to the fact they have air sacs in their bodies. What we smell is 50 times stronger to them. Sorry if he died but before getting any pet especially birds I would do some research so this does not happen again. Birds are not like cats and dogs they are very different in the way they need to be taken care of.

  4. Yes, parakeets die from cleaning products and paint fumes, especially those with pine scent, such as Pine Sol.  They also die if they get really scared. So if he was exposed to either fumes it could be fatal.  .

  5. All birds have very efficient and very sensitive respiratory systems.  It's entirely possible to kill a bird with fumes from non-stick pans (PTFE), cleaning products, air fresheners, pesticides, etc.  I'm sorry for the loss of your little pal :-(

  6. its possible, they used to take birds into coal mines to test for poisonous gases, if the bird died while you were digging it was time to get out in a hurry

  7. when you smell the fumes dont you get dizzy or feel sick well it the same for a bird and it may die too

  8. Yes they do.

Cleaning products and paint are all toxic and will kill birds.  The fumes killed him.  They are toxic to people too.

    Sad, sad story.

  9. They sure can and will!
