Question:

Do parakeets require a lot of attention?

I am being offered a parakeet for free and since I don’t currently have a pet I wouldn’t mind having one but I really don’t want it to croak on me in like a week. Can I just hang the cage next to the window and like feed it once a day or is there much more to keeping a bird alive? I used to have cats as pets and they pretty much take care of themselves.

  1. a parakeet being offered for free? from who? i would never get a parakeet from someone for free unless i know how its been taken care of. probably being offered for free because its sick or is really mean...anyways if u do get that parakeet and if its single u have to give it a lot of attention because if u don't, it'll pluck out its feathers and thats a hard habit to stop not only that, it'll be a sad bird. coupled parakeets don't need as much attention as single parakeets. single parakeets can  get easily attached to their owner if they spend a lot of time with it, good luck with your future parakeet

  2. What about love??

If you had a little child, would you keep it in a room ( cage) and just give it food and water?

No, you'd love it up , and play with it, and watch movies!

Cats and parrakeets are NOT the same animal! Not even the same classification!

You have to take it out EVERY day, and it will tame down.

If you do decide to get it, contact me for more information

  3. with parakeets they need to have access to food and water 24/7. It is a single bird? Did the previous (or current) owner interact with the bird, is it hand tamed? If so you will have to socialize with it. I wouldnt recomend getting another parakeet because once it has been solitary and your (or people) are its feathered friends, its not going to like other birds. I wouldnt get a bird because its free, because it sounds like you like easy pets, while yes parakeets "can" be easy to take care of but it sounds like you would not be willing to take care of it to the extent that you need. Why would it croak on you in a week?Parakeets can live up to 15 years, but I heard usually around 10.  It sounds to me that a bird is not the best pet for you, sorry.

  5. You have to keep food in with them 24/7 parakeet seeds and pellets, you have got to consider the mess they are going to make you will have to clean up daily outside the cage from them throwing the seeds around while eating. And they need clean water every day and lots of toys to play with, and consider they are going to be whistling most of the day light hours.

  6. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! dont do it...i thought the same thing..."o a parakeet that will be cute!!!" ...shoot me in the head...all he does is make a mess with his food and water.....screams day and night....i have to cover his cage in order to shut up......and he poops a lot....... and they live long!!! mine is almost six year old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  the only thing cool he does is he repeats whistles...

    :)

  7. Parakeets aren't like cats, but if you don't mind cleaning their cage out about once a week, their really not that high matinence. They need to have food and water accesable at all times, and toys to play with in their cage. Coupled parakeets are usually happier and require less attention that single birds, so if you only had one you would have to take it out with some regularity. The squaking really depends on the bird, but if you do end up with a noisy one, you can always put it in your room, or someplace where you don't spend a lot of time during the day. They will be qiet if you cover up the cage at night. They are very delicate, so be extremely careful not to cause bleeding  when clipping their wings and claws. Other than that you don't really have to worry about one dying on you. Good luck!!!
