Question:

Do parents have a right to punish their 19 yr old child by "whooping" them? I know, it's a ridiculous question

A friend of mine mentioned to me that someone they know told them about a ridiculous situation. Apparently their friend had been arguing with their parents. The friends parents then told them that they had been told by police that they could "whoop" their 19 year old child if they "misbehaved". I wouldn't think that parents could punish a 19 year old by spanking them and be legal. I was thinking hitting someone at that age would be consider domestic assault. I am not sure though.

  1. I don't think they should especially if they are moved out and everything.

  2. um, no

    19 is an adult,

  3. Lol . . . do they? I guess if they are older than 18, they're on their own here. . . I don't know if it would be considered domestic violence, but that's actually kinda funny.

  4. 19 is an adult, and no longer has to endure anything from their parents. If someone hit me at 19 i would hit them back!

  5. What's domestic assault and what isn't depends entirely on who's willing to press charges.

And I think such a situation is silly and sad.  "Whoopin" really only works on young kids.  It does not work at all on teens.

  6. Well either way despite the age they are still their someone's children. However, i believe it to be stupid because a lot of 19 year olds would have more strength then their parents. I'm 15 and  i am stronger than my mother so yeh.

  7. Depends on the situation.. if it was my child and they were being very disrespecful to me sure i would slap them. I am 21 and if i was to ever disrespect my mother and she was to slap me.. GOOD ON HER!!! some kids are soooo rude and disrespectful they need a woop even older than 19..did you hear about the girl that took her father to court because he grounded her... and she won... now thats sad.. but as the old/new saying goes.. "only in america"

  8. thats not even a bit legal

  9. Well no. 18 is when you are legally an adult in the US. So the parent would be charged for assault.

  10. I had a cop tell that, when I ask him if I could "beat' my child.  He looked at me and said "just don't leave bruises."

JUST cause a cop may have said  it does not mean that it is true or that a parent can do it..

IF a 19 year old does not like they way their parents are they can move out and never talk to them again..

  11. You know the saying "If you live under my house its my rules?"

    Well there you go.

  12. If the child is still living under their roof (the parents), then they should do as told.  If not, face the consequences whatever they may be.

Usually as a rule, spankings and things of that sort kind of end around the age of 12 / 13.  After that, it gets kind of Freaky!!!

  13. No- 18 is the age where you are a leagal adult. 18 and over, if ANYone assaults you, ("whooping" included) can be arrested and my be put in jail for a time. NOT legal, and frankly, NO ONE has the RIGHT to hit ANYONE, even parents! Your friend's parents lied and only wanted to trick your friend into thinking it was ok for them to do that!

  14. nope they are a adult. i would hit back

  15. Oh....wow....no.

  16. it is illegal now to hit even a young child (in the uk anyway)

  17. It's defined as battery.

Your parent(s) battered you, as you are of legal age, by using a blunt object or their hand or foot, or other body part to cause harm.

You are an adult at the age of 19.

You could either report them to the authorities or keep yourself physically apart from them to avoid harm/injury.

    Common sense.

  18. hmm..

    no..

its over 18 which is an adult..

  19. that cannot be true thats classed as gbh a would of thought parents or not ,spanking i dont think sooo!!
