Question:

Do parents think like this?

My mom seems to think that i am just a younger version of her. She is always shocked to find out that i have a different opinion about things than she does. She even went so far to say she didn't allow me to shave my legs when i was younger bc she did not have hair on her legs. I told her but i did and she was like "well i figured you were just like me so I didn't think you did either(it was blatant that i had hair on my legs to shave). I remember in psychology talking about how some parents don't see their children as separate but as an extension of themselves. I think my mom definitely does. Do any other parents you know think like this or is my mom just the only nut in the barrel lol?

  1. I am a parent and I don't think like that...I see my children as individuals...I think I like to look at them to see if we have any similarities but I don't see them as mini me's...maybe its cause my kids don't even look like me...IDK

  2. Too often, parents do think like that. I have to admit, I have such moments, with my own daughter.

You should have a long talk with your mother. Tell her how you feel. Talk about what your interests are. Maybe if she sees you do have things in common, she'll better appreciate your differences.

  3. No, not all parents are like this. A lot of parents know their children are individuals.

While it's not unusual for a child to grow up with similar beliefs and values as their parent, not every parent expects their children to echo them.

  4. I don't think all parents think like that, but there are those out there who do.
