Question:

Do passports contain details of entry and exit from every journey I have made?

Ie, would the show details on dates, times, locations for entering each country i have visited along with dates, times, locations for exiting each country?

If they do, would details of journeys made be transfered onto a renewed passport, or will they just remain on the old passport?

  1. mikem is right.

    Here's how it works:

Most countries nowadays have sophisticated servers that log movements across borders. If a country has this, your visit and exit day and time will be in the system for them to call up any time.

Though that is the preferred method of tracking movements, the traditional way was to chop the passport at exit and entry points. This is still used mainly as a backup for countries that do not have a computerised system(there are other reasons too, like sovereignity and agreements, but not important in this discussion) .

Thus for every visit, you will have at least 2 chops. The chops will indicate the date, but not the time.

Computer logs are kept as long as deemed necessary, but when you renew your passport, you get a new document. Thus your old chops in the old document are not transferred.

I hope u're not using this info for sinister purposes!

  2. old trips won't be transferred to your new passport, but they will be in the custom agent's computer

  3. hi,

most of the people in this forum have given u the answer you were lookin for however i would like to clarify the following. In case u havent submitted your I 94 there is a chance that they may question you at the border control/ immigration counter. if you explain to them the circumstances and the same are genuine there would not be any problem.

i am a frequent visitor to the US and for some reason the airline namely airfrance did not submit my i 94 though they collected the same at check in. when i returned they asked me wether i submited my i 94 and i said yes and there were not further questions... if i were you i would carry documentation of details to prove that i left the country within the stipulated period of time..

    thanks and Regards,

  4. Generally each time you enter or exit a country, you will get a stamp in your passport, and that stamp will show the name of the country and the date.

Certain countries will ask if you want your passport stamped or not, such as Israel and Cuba, since if you have stamps from those places in your passport it can cause trouble when trying to enter certain other countries (for instance, Iran or Saudi Arabia if you have been to Israel, and the US if you are a US citizen and have been to Cuba).

When you renew your passport, the stamps will not be transferred to the new one.  The one time I renewed my (US) passport, they did return my old one to me, with a small hole punched in the cover to indicate that it was no longer usable.

  5. Everytime you enter or leave a country your passport will be stamped with the date everytime you go through immigration, it will not show the time though. It is important for immigration to know where you have been and when as sometimes you cannot enter a country if you have been to a certain country in the last month (due to health reasons). If you do however get a new passport then the stamps will not be transferred onto the new one.. but remember if you are travelling you must have at least 6 months validity on your passport from your RETURN date.

  6. Yes, they do show your entrances and exits of the cities and countries you have visited.

When you renew your passport , your new book will be empty without any stamps.

You are given your old passport back,   (in the USA) so you can keep it ...

I am not sure if other countries give your old passports back.

  7. Passports contain stamps (or printed information) of every entry and exit you have used it for. So if the place where you go requires no passport then you will get no stamp on it. That may be the case within the European Union for example. But if you identify yourself with a passport i think they have to stamp it. Stamps usually show the date and some also show the time, whether it's an exit or an entry and at which migration office and counter you checked.

When you renew your passport you keep your old one. For some countries the visas are stuck to your passport and your passport may expire before the visa so you have to take both of them with you.

The stamps are not transferred to your new passport when you renew it. Ofcourse your passport is not the only record of your journeys. Every country keep their own records of the entrances and exits.
