Air cards give laptops internet as long as they have a carrier, like Verizon Wireless or Sprint. It virtually works anywhere your cell phone would work.That's at a monthly subscription cost.

Then there are wireless adapter cards that gives your laptop the ability to see and to connect on to a "hot-spot" or a wireless router. The internet and network already has to be existing and be in the same range in order to work.

If you get the laptop mobile cards, then yes they do. Laptops have cards built especially for them. You can get ones that connect to local wifi, and ones that connect to mobile broadband. USB devices also can give internet to a laptop. Of course all these require an internet provider that you have to pay for. Desktop PC cards do not fit in laptops however, and will not work.
